OIE/CIRAD Regional Training Workshop on Epidemiology, in particular of HPAI and TADs in ASEAN Countries in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University Bangkok, Thailand, 31 July-4 August 2006
The Workshop on Epidemiology, in particular of HPAI and TADs in ASEAN Countries, was jointly organised by OIE and CIRAD in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University, in Bangkok, Thailand, on 31 July-4 August 2006 to train national trainers of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) countries, engaged in animal health epidemiology, in particular of HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) and TADs (Transboundary Animal Diseases).
The Workshop was attended by 31 participants from ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam (in principle, one from the Central Bureau of the Animal Health Department and the other from the Local Animal Health authority, from each country, who are to become trainers in their respective countries), observers from Thailand (host country) and OIE (OIE Tokyo and OIE SEAFMD RCU in Bangkok), CIRAD (France) and Chulalorngkorn University (Thailand).
The opening addresses were delivered by Dr Teruhide Fujita, OIE Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific based in Tokyo, Prof. Dr Annop Kunavongkrit, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chulalorngkorn University, and Dr Flavie Goutard, CIRAD, and all of them stressed the importance of epidemiology, in particular for HPAI and other TADs including FMD, since they are serious concerns in Southeast Asia in these days.
Following the brief presentation of epidemiological aspects in the participating countries, presentations were made by OIE (one from OIE Tokyo on the major activities of the OIE relevant to epidemiological work (e.g. surveillance, etc.) and the other from SEAFMD RCU, Bangkok on FMD epidemiological surveillance in Southeast Asia) and FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP), Bangkok on HPAI situation and control measures taken by FAO in Southeast Asia.
CIRAD gave lectures on epidemiology aspects based on CIRAD developed teaching materials for Animal Health Epidemiology (RANEMA, CD-ROM software). They included different types of epidemiology, how to measure disease frequency, the descriptive epidemiology, descriptive values, prevalence, sampling, determining a sample size with a quantitative objective, a sampling design, etc. Group exercises on epidemiological analysis were conducted for deep understanding of the participants on epidemiology methodologies.
The programme of the Workshop is attached.
The Workshop was successfully achieved and a higher level of the outcome of this training workshop was given by the lecturers.
