OIE/FAO-APHCA Regional Workshop on Brucella Melitensis in Goats
(Luang Prabang, Laos, 25 October 2006)
This Workshop was held as a technical session of the 30th Session of FAO-APHCA.
The Session was attended by 40 participants from 13 countries (Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka and Thailand) and 3 international organisations (FAO, OIE and ILRI).
Dr B. Garin-Batsuji from the OIE World Reference Laboratory presented comprehensively on Brucellosis in Sheep and Goats especially on the latest diagnosis method and control measures against the disease. He started his presentation from epidemiology of the disease and then explained on diagnostic tools, bacterioscopy, isolation and identification, immunoenzymology-fluorescence and PCR. As control and eradication strategies against Brusellosis, he referred to combination of strategic surveillance and vaccination.
Dr Yoshiyuki Oketani from OIE Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific made a special presentation on “OIE pathway for BSE-free status declaration”. He briefly explained the history of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) and interpreted the OIE’s Terrestrial Animal Health Code, new chapter on BSE, including Questionnaire for “BSE-status Recognition (Revised version-13 December 2005)”. He emphasised that a realistic goal would be achieved by statistical risk analysis based on accurate surveillance data. He reminded the participants that the last OIE General Session declared four countries as BSE free and the other four countries as BSE provisionally free, and informed that any Member Country wishing to submit an appreciation before the end of 2006 for negligible risk or controlled risk status would be assessed against the present OIE Code.
On the afternoon of 25 October 2006 the OIE managed a half-day field trip to visit small-scale goat farms in a village in the mountain area.
