In 1971, an ‘OIE Regional Office in Asia’ was created through the efforts of its first Director, Dr Tanaka, who was succeeded by Dr M. Ogata. The Office published an occasional regional animal health bulletin until 1981.
In 1990, the International Committee decided to reactivate the former ‘OIE Regional Office in Asia’. Thus, at the end of 1991, Dr Y. Ozawa was appointed ‘OIE Representative for Asia and the Pacific’ based in Tokyo, Japan.
The ‘Japan/OIE Programme to Improve Animal Health Information System in Asia and the Pacific’ was set up in 1992. It is financed by annual contributions from the Japanese Government.
In 2000, Dr T. Fujita succeeded Dr Y. Ozawa as the Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific. FAO and OIE launched the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs) initiative in 2004 and the Permanent Secretariat of Regional GF-TADs Steering Committee was decided to be located at OIE Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific.
The activities of the OIE Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific are summarised in the page “Programmes”.
